Song Review: "Wish You The Best" by Lewis Capaldi

Via Lewis Capaldi on Spotify

Lewis Capaldi rose to fame in 2017 when he released his first single "Bruises". As a independent artist, this truly was a staggering jump start as he reached 25 million streams on spotify; setting a record in itself. Soon following that, Lewis released his second EP, "Breach". This EP is what truly catapulted him into the spot he is today, bringing us hit songs such as 'Grace' and the chart-topping 'Someone You Loved'.

Not only have people's hearts been captivated by his first album- ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’- but also by his tiktok and social media presence. The 26 year old is very well versed in how to make people laugh with his skits, reactions and interactions with other artists, such as Niall Horan. He catches people’s attention with his goofy and charismatic personality but then leads those same people to experience a range of emotions through his music.

Following the pandemic, there has been high anticipation for his second full length album, which is set to release on May 19th. "Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent" currently has four singles released, each one giving a emotional, yet embracing feeling. Lewis Capaldi has been gifted with the ability to make you feel his lyrics; the best example being "Wish You The Best". Leading in with piano and a light vocal, giving an airy yet soft vibe. There is a intricate way of expressing specific emotions yet not overdoing any aspects of the instrumentals. As the song progresses, the dynamic builds to a more upbeat tone. It ignites feelings of sorrow, yet acceptance as the melodic swells and drone slowly increase in volume. Often times, as an artist, having someone interpret a song with the emotions felt while writing can be difficult, but Lewis truly is one who tells a story flawlessly.

Most of the song, while instrumentally simple, has a grit to the vocals that is truly heartbreaking. He belts the notes in a way that truly make you listen to what it is he's saying. The bridge breaks down back into the soft vocals again that almost, it seems, signifies a point of realization in the story. This is where the person has come to see that the other person's happiness is more important than them self. A realization that they have to let go. The song speaks of heartbreak, sadness, loneliness, acceptance, and letting go; knowing that as long as they find someone who makes them happy that is what is important.

I believe this song got so popular because it is a feeling that a lot of people can resonate with; many can relate to having emotional rollercoasters in a relationship. This album will most definitely bring even more songs that are sure to sway our hearts and minds, transform who we are through music, provide comfort and a way to get feelings out in a healthy way.

This album continues to be very highly anticipated, so be sure to check out the full release on May 19th.
